My 2002 Camry's A/C light was flashing also. I pulled the relay part #90987-20208 and banged it a few times on a piece of wood and that took care of the problem. Thank you all for your suggestions. It worked !!! Praise the Lord!!!

From a technical service bulletin (6/3/05), the AC clutch relay 90987-02022 needs to be replaced with 90987-020028. The relay "chatter" is what's causing the light to blink as such. Relay is located under the hood, drivers side fuse box. It is the smaller of the two relays located towards the front of the car.

I have a 2002 Camry that had the same problem. I changed the cabin filter (located in the rear of the glove compartment). Also tapped on the compressor relay switch located in the fuse box by the battery. It is the white switch with the numbers 90987-02028. A/C works great now.

I usually don't bother posting on these boards -- especially if it requires registration, but I just HAD to say THANK YOU! I like to research options before taking my car in so that I know if the estimate/diagnosis is somewhat plausible.
I'd check and recharged the freon first, but that didn't do any good (in fact, the meter showed I was full.) Before heading for my dealer (who would have charged me $115 just to LOOK for the problem), I followed these suggestions to replace the Relay fuse. I'm hardly mechanical (I basically fill the gas tank and can replace a tire in an emergency but no more than that), and found the instructions in this forum super clear and easy to follow.
The GREAT news is I didn't even have to buy and replace the fuse! Somewhere else in this forum, someone suggested removing the fuse, tapping it hard against a hard surface, and reinserting it. I figured no harm in trying before even spending $1. Voila! Worked like a charm!! Thrilled!
It's been 3 months and the AC is working like a charm -- nicely arctic in fact! :-)
The kind contributors to this forum saved me a bundle of money. I wonder IF the dealer would have turned this simple problem into a reason to say I needed a $1200 repair? THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

This information was very helpful, Thank you! I went to Advanced Auto Parts and picked up the relay for $16.53 with Tax included, popped it in and the AC was back to working like a charm. I had previously called my dealer and of course they said it would be $90.00 to diagnose, but said it is probably the compressor. Amazing how quickly they want to replace that darn compressor. You can't tell me they haven't heard about the relays going bad???? Anyway the relay from Advanced Auto Parts is part # 35874.

Thank you 4Runner for this post. I have a 2003 Camry LE. The A/C did not work and the light flahses. I bought a clutch relay as you have indicated in your post. It solved the problem right away. so far it has been working well for more than a week. I bought the relay from Napa for $35.00. Checked with Toyata dealer, they were asking for $120.00. thanks again for your very helpful post.

I had the same problem... blinking light and no ac. I just now unplugged the magnetic clutch relay, banged it a few times to "loosen up" stuck internals, plugged it back in and all is well.
I guessed that this might work because I had this same problem (minus the blinking light... the Echo is simpler) with my 2002 Toyota Echo and the mechanic fixed it buy switching the horn relay with the ac relay. He told me my relay was problematic and needed to be replaced. This quick fix was a stop gap and I would not have a horn until I got a new relay. However the horn worked just fine. So, just switching the relays was the fix in this case... the only answer, I surmised, was the physical nudging of internal relay parts by way of banging the relays around while switching them.
So, with the Camry, when the same problem showed up, I went straight to the relay, banged it around a bit, plugged it back in and all is well for now. If this starts to happen chronically, then I guess I will have to replace the relay.
Thanks to another post, I knew the proper relay is called the "magnetic clutch relay". This does not sound like it has any connection to the ac, but apparently is the correct relay.

I too am an owner of a 2003 Toyota Camry who recently experienced the blinking led on my air conditioning control button. After reading this forum, I checked the fuses associated with the air conditioning and after discovering the clutch not engaging ,replaced the Magnetic Clutch Relay (90987-02022) and that cured the problem. The clutch pulls in and the air conditioner operates properly. I purchased the relay at our local O'Reilly's for under $14.00. The relay is located behind the battery, in the fuse box and simple needle nose pliers are all that is needed to remove and replace it.
