Rootcause you were dead on about the distributor gear. My 1997 GMC Safari 4.3 was missing randomly, but usually at shift points or when you aren't putting any strain on the engine. I changed the plugs,wires,distributor cap & rotor and the problem was temporarily fixed for about 2 weeks then it started again. Finally decided to check the gear after reading this forum and sure enough the gear was pretty worn so i went and took a distributor of a jimmy at the scrap yard for $20 and my problem is fixed. This forum is great diagnostic tool............ Definate money saver.
