I'm considering both cars as my next one shortly.
I currently own a Mazda 626 and have rented the Mazda6 sportswagon and Mazda3. Handled fine. I also like the dealership and repair shop.
I drove the G6 GT and found it more than enough for my needs. I like the latter's looks but question reliability. The dealership experience also left a bad taste in my mouth.
Has anyone test-driven both? What was your impression? What would you recommend?

if you want to avoid problems, go Mazda. Pontiac is junk, as are all domestics, its your hard earned money, dont squander it. look in the paper...how many used G6's are for sale?...now how many used mazda6's are for sale... base your purchase on that in terms of reliability

I work in a very large multi-line dealership. I have driven both of these cars. The Pontiac G6 is a far better buy for many reasons, not to mention the price. Since Pontiac G6's out sell the mazda about 3 to 1 you would expect more to be available. The blanket statement about an entire brand being "junk" is rather ridiculous, just look at the number of foreign brand names on this site that are in need of repairs. I would prefer the G6 hands down over the Mazda 6.

to be fair though more people own the import brands so it would make sense that there would be more in need of repairs. not that they are bad its just sheer numbers. it would be reversed if there were more domestics running versus imports. just food for thought

Good point. In SoCal, import cars handily outnumber domestic vehicles at least 3 to 1. Don't know about trucks and SUVs, though. But that's not a big issue for me.

I do. And I agree: the 6 reminds me of some older Corollas

The Pontiac G6 may look better, but if you want a reliable car, go with the Mazda.
