We are on a ski trip 100 miles from home.  Tried to engage my 4WD going up the mountain and it wouldn't engage.  I took it to the auto repair shop (small town) and they said the transfer case is most likely broken.  My question is can I get home as long as I do not engage the 4WD?

depending on the type of transfer case...

if it operated just fine in 2 wheel drive high range.. you should be OK...

but since i got on this late.. i bet you are already home..

Please... before throwing a new transfer case at it...

diagnose the issues.. it could be as simple as a loose vacuum hose or electrical issue..

without make.. model. year.. engine .. transmission and transfer case version..  its hard to diagnose things ..  there are a lot of 4x4 versions...
