Does anyone have any ideas why my 96 4Runner is failing to fire on cylinder number 2. The problem started a couple of weeks ago when the engine was started. It went away for a few days then came back sporadically. Eventually it became almost constant and popped up a check engine light and we had that diagnosed. All it told us was misfire on cyliner 2. We had the engine tuned up, all new plugs and leads, and it ran fine for 30 miles and the problem, and the check light came back again. Vehicle has done 138K miles and is in very good shape, always serviced regularly, no towing or 4-wheeling. We're hoping it isn't a valve. Could it be an injector? Help?

Plug looked pretty clean, no buildup / corrosion. We had a timing belt changed about 2-3 weeks ago - any chance it could be related to that?

i highly doubt it could be an injector because it runs fine until about 30 miles.I would say to have a vacuum test to see if there is any problems with a vacuum leak. vacuum leaks will tell you if you have a sticking valve guide, a burnt valve and more common internal head problems. if not a vacuum leak then i would have the compression tested on all cylinders and compare the readings. that will tell you if you need your engine rebuilt due to the ignition of the fuel/air mixture passing between the piston rings and cylander walls. If that does not show you any differnces in readings you should have a Running compression test. Hopefully this will help and good luck!
