I was looking to buy an Audi A4 before saw the consumer reports review. Apparently a lot of issues on the engine sludge buildup at 60k-80k miles, right after the warranty expiration. It's too bad because I really agree with Audi's philosophy that a car should be elegant, sporty, and practical.

One of my friend's uncle is a 53yo mechanic. He says that the cars he sees most for repair are the europeans brands, especially the VWs and the BMW 7 series.

Volkswagen is generally considered the red headed step-child of German car quality, but I must say I have had a 2001 Passat V6 from new and have only had to do a smattering of routine maintenance. Brakes never squeak like on EVERY new 5-Series I have come across. I did hear once that the chairman of VW uttered that the Passat was "the most perfect Volkswagen ever." Maybe I am just REALLY lucky. But I have also had a couple of GTIs and no catastrophes. Just so you know German quality doesn't have to come from BMW or Mercedes.

Your response about the window regulators was exactly what my concern was.  A 2001 VW passat left front door regulator--are they a known problem or could someone damage the regulator by trying to open door with "slim jim"?
