There is a large market of buyers that require a vehicle that can:
- bring home supplies for home-improvement projects
- take kids back and forth to places they need to go
- fuel efficient enough that a V-8 is not needed.
- something that is still cool to drive.

Many buyers do not want mini-vans, suvs, but have those needs.
It seems there are two different kinds of trucks today. Full size and Mid. I've seen crossbreed cars bigger than some mid-size trucks..  There needs to be another size truck in between full and mid for those who have all the needs of a typical mini-van, but refuse to drive one of those ugly machines.

The Chevrolet Avalanche or Honda Ridgeline seems to fit the bill though the last one "something that is still cool to driver" is subjective.

You can probably find an inexpensive Chevy, though. I haven't heard of Honda lowering their prices on the Ridgeline.

hybrid cars will be the way forward. Not sure what the sitauion is in the USA but here in the UK. Low pollutings cars will be the only choice left for low income families. Car manufacturers will soon start cashing in on this market.
