I am looking at buying a gently used (20k miles?) 911 as my main commuter vehicle (25 miles each way), but I feel I should keep my old "normal" sedan for practical reasons: having an old banger that I can use to haul gear, bicycles, home improvement materials, etc. Front wheel drive when it ices; four doors when I'm being social; you get the picture.
I currently own a 2006 Acura TL, of which I am the sole owner. It is paid off, and just costs me insurance. It has 105k miles, and I've already done the timing belt on it. It's a six-speed and will need a new clutch in the next 10k miles, but other than that, it feels pretty solid. I figure at some point, the suspension will need work, but it seems okay for now.
Am I setting myself up for a maintenance nightmare? If I start driving the 911 regularly, that should ease up on the aging of the TL considerably. Does this make good financial sense, or am I headed off a financial cliff?

you could probably buy a new tl for the price of a used 911...
they are VERY VERY expensive to not only maintain.. but repair.. and the car insurance is out of site.. not just liability..
i would love a porsche.. for a week end car...
why not see if you can rent a 911 from a car rental for a few days.. see if it fits you.. they are a total different car than your TL..
i keep thinking of the head cracking issue on some of the flat six motors.. cheep to fix.. somewhere between 10 and 25 grand.. pull in a porsche dealership.. they just pull the motor .. slip in a new or reman motor. ship the core to germany to cover the get rid of the evidence.. no tear downs allowed..

but these are on other models. like the 996 which is liquid cooled.
i thought you might be talking like using a panamerica to go costco shopping.. filling the back of the car so full that you have to make 4 attempts at closing the rear hatch before it will..
if you make enough money that replacing an engine is not a problem right out of pocket change.. go for the 911.. once you get in.. you may want to take a MUCH longer route to get to work and way longer to get home..
i knew a fellow.. he lived west of his work.. never got on the freeway going west on the way home.. east.. south.. north.. just checking out the long way home... guess they should have called it the 411 instead of the 911. as one might need info on which way is home..
this is only my personal opinion.. i don't work for the magazine.. or the web site..
