accord radio/ clock issues

2005 Accord, 4 door, 4 cylinder... I realize the stereo/clock was recalled but I missed the January 2012 deadline (mine just recently stopped working). It worked for a while by simply removing the negative battery cable and then connecting it again. The stereo/clock would come on and work for a short time and then stop again. Now that doesn't even work. The Honda dealer wants $450 just for the <motherboard/circuit board>? not even including labor.
I cannot afford this. What are my options? Can I buy an aftermarket stereo and install it or is the problem deeper within?
I'm not new to general mechanical repairs but this electronic stuff is over my head. Please help.
Many thanks,
T
