Idiot light confuses idiot

Have 2000 ford Taurus. A dash light came on and my mechanic is clueless. Looks like an exclamation point surrounded by a gear. Any ideas? Thanks Chele

a gear with a exclamation point is check the transaxle.
page 11 of your owners manual ...

Check transaxle
Illumination of this light indicates
that a problem has been detected
and shifting may be restricted. If
this lamp remains on, have your
vehicle serviced immediately.

have his plug in his OBD2 scan tool.. check not for engine codes. but drivetrain codes... and data..
