2004 monte Carlo ss not supercharged

When replacing my thermostat I noticed a hole about the size of a quarter on top of what I think is the bell housing. The hole is symmetrical and appears to be a clean cut hole. However it still worries me. See the picture below to see what I mean. The hole is close to the center of the car as well.

The gold sensor is the coolant temperature sensor, btw. Any ideas what that hole is? I plan on covering it up but want to know what it is first.
