Is there any way to tell if the differential is good before installing the transmission? I've already went through the transmission clutches, gears, etc.. I am not too experienced with the differential side but should I open it up and look for certain things?

Definitely should check it. You need to look at the differential side bearings and races for wear and pitting. But most importantly you need to check the spider gears. Check to see if the gears wobble on the shaft. What happens is the gears wear into the shaft and eventually seize onto it and spin it.When the shaft spins it breaks the roll pin that holds it in.Once that roll pin is broken centrifugal force starts to walk the shaft out of the housing.Once it comes out too far it pops a hole in the case. While the differential is out of the case the other thing you need to check is the pinion shaft bearings. That is the shaft that drives the differential.Clean the bearings with brake kleen and blow them dry. Then squirt some trans fluid on them. Then spin the shaft if its smooth and quiet you don't have to mess with them. You need to do this with the rear transfer gear for the output shaft off the trans or you wont be able to spin the pinion shaft fast enough. The last thing to check is the bore in the differential housing where the axle rides. You will notice it has spiral grooves in it for lubrication. While you have the differential housing out of the trans stick the axle in it and make sure it doesn't wobble too much in the bore {particularly the drivers side}.If that bore is worn the axle will be able to move up and down too much and the axle seal will leak.If it is worn too much you need to replace the differential housing.
The Toyota 130 differentials go bad all the time. That's what makes it an expensive trans.

I cracked the side of the diff cover off.. I can't what needs to be taken off, plus there's a newer gasket on it that says TransTech, could this one have been recently rebuilt? The clutches look good..
