Car has Bosch electric brake booster with rear discs and ABS. First thing I noticed was when brakes applied, both ABS warning and red brake failure light would momentarily illuinate. Brakes worked, but with spongy pedal. I checked master cylinder and fluid quantity appeared normal. While gone on trip, wife reported brakes stopped working. I checked fuse for electric pumps, bled brakes, looked for replacement relay for ABS controller, but discovered the relay alone is $200! Brakes do work but only with very high pedal effort and both the ABS and brake warning remain illuninated with ignition on.When I search for parts, I don't see any mention of this electrically boosted system. What I mostly see is vacuum boosted master cylinders which are intended to work with drum rear brakes. This is a Canadian car. Does anybody know if this system can be economically repaired or is it possible to put the vacuum boosted master cylinder on the car? I'm just looking for straws before I give up, thanks.
it can sometimes be repaired... changing to a vacuum based unit is possible as far as i know.. as they used vacuum units on similar models.. you will loose the antilocks and probably have to figure out how to work around the system...Nothing is cheep on that system... its been a few years.. i seem to recall that the switch block had a problem failing.. and mopar was out of stock on them.. nothing is impossible from fixing or modifying.. as long as its done properly.. and the driver/owner knows that modifications to the brake system can result in......... i have not checked for parts availability lately.. and if you live where brakes get inspected by your state... this is going to be an issue if you swap stuff around.. i have NOT performed this swap.. or done much to study if its possible.. az covers some of the system.... you really need to access it somehow to check for codes.. i will have to figure out how to do it.. its been a while since i worked on one of these.. you can read up on some of the system at AZ...http://www.autozone.com:80/autozone/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?pageId=0900c15280268af6it could be a simple problem... i actually have the antilock brake manual section for this exact model.. but its stored away in one of probably 200 boxes stacked in storage.. and it's only 3/8 of an inch thick.. there is proper info on it over at eautorepair.net or alldatadiy.com more to come.. be sure to check back....
