Can anyone help me with a strange starting problem. I have to hold the key for 10 to 15 seconds sometimes more, before my truck will fire up. I've found sometimes if I crank it over a few times then let go of the key it will fire as soon as I release the key but its not enough to start it. When I try again right away and crank it just a few turns and let go of the key it will again start to fire as the key is being released and it will usually start on that try. Some back ground on the motor is it has only been open up one time to put the common intake gasket set on it. I have 273,000+ miles on it. I put a new cap, rotor, wires and plugs in it last month but that made no difference in the starting issue. I've replaced the fuel pump a year ago and it has 60 psi when the key is turn on but it slowly dropps when the key is turned off. There are no codes on the computer either. I need some help with this one. It's embarassing to sit somewhere and people are looking at me while I crank and crank to get started.

the Ignition switch is worn OUT... it takes a few hours and some odd tools.. to change it..
i just changed one.. the return spring goes bad.. the contacts burn...
this is a music box switch... its a spool with pins sticking out.. the pins hold the spring loaded contacts open.. when the spool rotates . the pins move away and allow the contacts to close.. with the spring power.. this does not always ensure a good contact..
you will need an E 4 or E 5 torx socket to remove the screws holding the column cover on.. and then the switches in..

you can see that one of the switch levers is open.. and the other is closed.. the bar they swing on has power for all the circuits on that side.. the other bar is usually powered from a second wire..
