Well, never had an issue with this before. I drove it most of the day today until this;

I turned the key, engine started but made metal-on-metal sounding banging under the hood. It was loud. I turned the car off. I then waited a minute and then turned the key, engine started, and everything sounded perfect.

Any ideas at this point? I drove it home and it had a mildish-heavy smell under the hood, like burning oil.

My oil was recently changed and car maintained. I am afraid to drive it further. Anything I should look for? I have 68,000miles on it.

I have all new ac cooler and condensor, and new radiator fan installed in the past 6 months.

perhaps the starter stayed engaged...

the relays that control it have a small chance of having their contacts stick...  but it has happened ..

the ignition switches may have not have returned from the crank position of the ignition lock cylinder.   do you have a Lot of keys on the ring.. wait.. does your jeep use a key to start?? i don't know.. i have not been in one yet..

I do have about 15 keys on my ring and a key turned starts ignition.  I DO know that when I got in my car i was moving quickly and rushing to turn the car on...it was cold out!

It happened so quickly that I really had no time to get more specifics on the situation.

If the starter stayed engaged or stayed in crank position would that cause the mild smell that was coming from under the hood?

well... most starter motors don't like to be spun like that..

the 60s through early 90s versions would literally explode inside the starter housing like a grenade went off when the key hung up..

it could be many different things..

you might want to look around.. make sure that nothing was caught up in the fan belt..
