a few things...
first.. you have to post the photos to photobucket then you can paste the links here... so we can see the photos
i am quite familiar with quadrajet carbs and emission systems of that vintage...
second.. are you aware that there are about 40 car magazines on this site.. including high performance pontiac..
log in.. click my user name.. you will see a link to it on the left side.. there are forums there where you can also post this question.. i will be glad to help here ... i am also a member there..
the dash light fuse is the short one on the bottom row.. slightly offset ... that fuse is sent power from the dark green wire on the headlight switch... the instrument cluster light wires from that fuse is a grey wire..
the headlight switch has a big round resistor block.. that is the variable for the instrument cluster illumination .. it varies the power to the bulbs..
this is the proper fuse box shape and most of the wiring is correct...

what is a D800 rear view mirror??? are you restoring this car???? i am not familiar with rear view mirrors... i guess i will have to search behind me..

there are all kinds of things that can cause fuel burning issues..
including stuff that needs to be done to the hard parts of the carb...
some models like yours have internal leaks that need to be properly repaired..
there is also an adjustment called the APT adjustable part throttle.. this can make a HUGE difference in what sort of fuel economy you get...
along with almost every other early HEI distributer i have worked on had had the mechanical advance hanging up do to rust on the inner shaft.. grab the rotor.. twist it against the spring tension.. release it.. does it snap all the way back to the stop..
how are the weight bushings under the rotor..?? i have also found them with the bushings worn out and slots worn where the bushings should have kept it round..
can you post the carb number that is stamped into the drivers side of the carb.. behind the linkage on the main body...
170????
could be one of these numbers.. its STAMPED In.. and vertical.. with a second line of numbers below it.. 17056262 17056263 17056264 17056266 17056274 17056281 17056562 17056564 17056566 17056568

take a step back with the camera....if you are shooting in high resolution like you are.. i can blow them up on my screen easily..
i don't think you have you vacuum hoses hooked up correctly...
i also don't see a choke assembly on the passenger side of the carb..
how about a carb number??
is that engine backfiring through the intake???? is that why the choke blade is discolored..

i dont think its backfiring and if it is how would i be able to tell? see my girlfriends grandfather is a retired mechanic and he moved some stuff around but he had to go to ny i kno he did move that hose for sure tho and i think it is missing a choke! i remember him saying something like that and saying thats why its wasting so much gas....ummm ill go look for the number and let you know....and i think the discolor is just rust it was sitting for a while...the guy who sold it 2 me bought a brand new engine and a car and put some on his 80 something blazer so i know he took parts off the carb.....but he just let my car sit there for like 2 yrs witout bein driven in a grass yard so thats mostly rust.....

oh.. and you don't need a choke device to improve fuel economy.
its only used for cold starts..
on this model.. there are several devices that are missing that were attached to secondary air door levers that help to keep the air doors from opening early..
i wanted a bigger picture to see what hoses you have connected to where..
just curious... what did they charge you 2000 bucks for???
i don't see any work done in these pictures..

to go farther in helping you...
i need the number off the drivers side of the carb... so i can check to know if the factory calibration thats in it is even close to what is needed for that motor.. remember.. that style of carb could be used on anything from a 301 to a 455 or even a 500 inch caddy motor.. the internal jetting is where the difference is...
i would also like to know the ID numbers off the passenger side front of the block below the cylinder head and above the water pump..
and... i need a good In focus well lit photo of the engine compartment that shows it all in one image straight down view.. from like where the hood latch is when the hood is up... so i can see all the vacuum hoses.. take several .. some with the air cleaner on.. some with the air cleaner off..
if you have hooked up some of the hoses to direct vacuum.. you may be really killing the fuel economy.. but since i cannot be there... i cannot see what is there.. to tell you what MIGHT Be wrong..
if you don't show your license number or any other identifying details.. nobody will know this is your car..
next... how handy are you with automotive repairs... and .. do you have an assortment of automotive tools.. you won't need much..
i am going to say.. that you will probably need to inspect the HEI distributer ... for worn components..
you are going to probably need to sort and put the spark plug wires into separators.. its cheep.. DO not bundle them together.
you are probably going to need to take the quadrajet off and carefully take it apart.. clean it with spray cleaners.. i use brake cleaner.. rather than carb cleaner spray.. carefully note what the part numbers are on the primary and secondary needles.. and NOT touch the APT adjustment screw that requires a pair of needle nose to move .. screw that up.. its hours of test driving to get it right.. and there is NO factory spec.. it was done on the assembly line..
i can cover some of the info you will need to know to inspect these systems...

well i have the socket wrench tools and all the regular house hold tools i.e hammer, plyers, needle nose etc. and i cant say im not handy when it comes to fixin cars i just actually never tried but i actually have a mechanic working on my car for side money but he basically only does what i ask to him to do and nothing more. i'll have the pics for you tomorrow but the only one i really understand is the carb numbers because i saw those. but everything else ill read again and search carefully. sorry if i take long to write back sometimes im at work almost all da time if there is any other way we can communicate if you feel comfortable that way you can just inbox me and let me know because you're helping me a great deal. thanks!
