I have a 2006 Volvo V50. We had some work done on the car to replace the front struts and the front lower control arms. After this repair, there was a grinding noise from the right front wheel on accelerating and turning right. The repair place replaced the right front drive axle and for a while, this was lessened, but it has returned more strongly. The problem is getting worse and is now VERY pronounced when accelerating and/or turning right; especially when the car is cold. After it warms up a while, the noise mostly stops, but is always somewhat creaky when I turn right. The sound disappears almost entirely when the car turns to the left. Any ideas what this problem is or how it can be corrected?

you probably have a wheel bearing failing..
its NOT an easy job to do.. requires removing the steering knuckle from the car..
then pressing the bearing and hub out and the new one back in...

these last steps are important..

if you don't have the exact tools to do the press job.. you WILL ruin the new bearing..

this is what you are going to possibly need to replace..

in the lower image.. the split ring is only pressing on the outside of the bearing ring to force it back into the steering knuckle.. if you don't have the special tool.. when trying to press it in.. if you press by using the wheel hub.. you will leave little dents in the race from the pressure exerted by the hydraulic ram shoving the assembly together.. this little dents will cause the new bearing to fail again in a very short time...
many shops have a hub shark tool. i don't know if they are going to be able to press this in properly with that tool set..
you might find it easier to pick up a good used steering knuckle with a hub that spins smooth , if you can find one...
