hello new to the forum. I am a total noob at cars so I wanted to go somewhere, where I might be able to talk to people who know what they are talking about.

I own a '96 pontiac sunfire 2.2 my engine blew out and I am looking to replace it. someone told me that a chevy cavalier engine same year would fit in perfectly to replace it as easily as a sunfire engine would. so my question is to the best of your knowledge is this true?

thank you in advance for your answers

usually.. please identify the VIN number 8th digit...  and that that both cars emission labels have the same info.. there are differenced between years.. 95 and before.. are OBD1.. or obd1.5.. 96 and newer are OBD2..

1996 Pontiac Sunfire: Available engines
4 Cylinders 4    2.2L SFI OHV
4 Cylinders T    2.4L SFI DOHC

1996 Chevrolet Cavalier: Available engines
4 Cylinders 4 2.2L SFI OHV
4 Cylinders T 2.4L SFI DOHC

these are the same car.. but there might be differences in the options on the engines..

i don't have an exact interchange for what other years may fit.. some junk yards have a hollander interchange..  that will show it..

the engine model number seems to be an.    LN2

looks like ONLY the 96 and 97 vin 4 front wheel drive versions will work...  the rear wheel drive version is similar but probably not a direct interchange..   hope this helps...  sorry i did not think of this earlier..
