I had a parking light bulb replaced and 5 minutes later a "Service Vehicle Soon" light went on and then I lost the light in my dashboard. The Drive, Park etc light was lit but the entire dashboard above that was not. I went to a mechanic and he said the bulb was not put in properly and the prongs were bent and touching each other and caused a short. When he fixed the prongs all the dash lights went back on. I went back to the mechanic who installed the bulb and he said it is impossible as the tail light has nothing to do with the dashboard. Was it a coincidence that the Service Vehicle Soon light went on 5 minutes after he installed the bulb and the dash went black. He insists it is not related but on my bill from the mechanic who fixed the problem it says "Repaired short in right rear tail light (Bulb was installed incorrectly). What do you think?

depending on your car.. it might be possible to short out the CAN system... (Controller area Network) since on most cars newer than 2002 ... have that system running MOST of the electrical systems..
i have NOT heard of this before.. but.. the way the system is wired.. IT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE...
there have been reports of an IPod adaptor plugged into the back of a jeep stereo and the harness plugged back into that.. that took out EVERYTHING in the jeep except for the engine .. it blocked the CAN signals from getting to the stereo.. and one by one.. each of the can modules were shut off... as soon as it was removed.. everything woke up and worked perfectly..

did it blow it out.. requiring an EXPENSIVE replacement instrument cluster... or just fixing the tail light connections allowed it to work again.. as the CAN system was shorted out, so it protected its self by shutting down..

no not expensive $25.00 all labor i suspect til they found out what was wrong. as soon as they found the problem, straightened out the prongs and all worked properly.

Thanks for the diagram which is way beyond my understanding. I am a 64 year old woman. By the way, the mechanic who installed the bulb said if I can prove it was related he would give me $500.00. I could really use that money lol!!! (not that I believe that for a second. Anyway on a more serious note, all the problems happened after he installed the bulb. I just have trouble believing it was just a coincidence. Thanks for your hard work though
