Downstream O2 Sensor questions I ran a OBD Scan program from my netbook today and observed the following:
Can someone who knows how O2 sensors work explain which downstream sensor is working correctly, see the attached photo.
This photo shows the O2 sensors after the vehicle has been warmed up to normal operating temp. The downstream are the two on the bottom.

can you get another waveform sample at a steady 2500 RPMs
there is some good reading articles out there.. but the spam robot has my number today..
you might google articles on p0420
or oxygen sensor wave form...
a place called pico has some great ones..
motor magazine has more..
undercar service also...

thanks, but I haven't gotten any codes at all.
Would this have anything to do with my having a stutter when going down the road with a load on the motor?

just curious.. what car or truck are you working on..
there could be a LOT of issues causing what you describe...
misfiring cylinders...
torque converter clutch locking and unlocking...
does your car or truck.. ACTUALLy have 4 oxygen sensors???
most of the time.. you can switch left and right sensors and see if the wave form follows...
being sure to use a TINY amount of spark plug thread anti seize on the threads without getting it on the sensor shield..... so it does not lock up tight for the next time you try to take them out..

2002 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V6, 109K miles
transmission was recently rebuilt but think they didn't rebuild the front pump. I have the parts they changed out so can look through them and see. So it could be the Torque Converter clutch locking and unlocking but I don't see any erratic change in RPM indicating this.
Yes it has 4 sensors, did you look at the photo I provided in original post? Why would you ask that?

different cars have slightly different symptoms..
if you still have a shudder.. chuggle... how ever you described it.. edit .. studder...
you might want to examine the inside of the distributer cap... make sure there is NOT a lot of buildup on the cap terminals inside.. the tip of the rotor......
if you can.. pull the coil wire from the cap... position it about 3/4 inch from a good ground on the engine... have somebody crank the engine for a few seconds... see if you can get a nice bright blue snappy sounding spark ...
the coils on those are known to have internal shorts and reduce spark output.. causing all kind of problems.
with a digital volt meter.. you could OHM the spark plug wires... 1,000 ohms per inch.. max...
set meter to 200K ohms... measure directly... the meter reading should be less than the length of wire in inches... an 18 inch wire will read probably 9 to 14 on the meter at that range..
with the coil wire out.. you could also listen to the engine being cranked... for an even cranking sound.. if you have a low cylinder... you will hear if you listen carefully the starter speed up when it comes to a cylinder with low compression..

is it safe to put coil wire on ground and turn over, wouldn't this take out my computer or the coil itself?
The coil is new, plugs, wires, cap and rotor all new. I have cleaned the wire grounds on the firewall too.

the coil fires it's voltage through the coil wire, cap.. rotor, cap, spark plug wire, spark plug.. head.. and then where ever the ignition module is to complete the circle...
it jumps gaps at the tip of the rotor and across the spark plug..
did you install spark plug wire separators... so the plug wires are separated... induction crossfiring can happen when wires are close together.. what... the magnetic field generated by the high voltage pulse down one wire.. can induce voltage in a second wire if they run close together for long enough.. this has been an issue on V8 motors usually.. where the cylinders fire every 90 degrees of crank rotation.. but at 120 degrees of crank firing.. you could be lighting the mixture just as the intake is closing.. causing your studder...
since you have replaced all that..
examine them.. that the spark plug wires are fully snapped down on the spark plugs. that they are firmly seated and locked into the cap.. . sometimes the wires into the cap don't get locked down.. this causes the high voltage to JUMP a gap... causing heat build up .. and corrosion problems inside the cap wire socket and to the end of the wire terminal.. i am not saying you have done it wrong.. i have done it wrong.. double check...
because this motor uses a distributer.. i don't know how much the ECM can pick up the misfire count...
were you able to get another oxygen sensor waveform pattern at a steady 2500 rpms...
how about looking at the short term and long term fuel trim numbers???
are they within 10% plus or minus??? for bank one and bank two????
if you can paste the entire set of data stream at idle warmed up and then a second at 2500 rpms.. that would be great..

This idling the second number is a duplicate not sure why, the excel file it creates doesn't put in a heading.

this data is idling with the pvc hose unplugged, creating a vacuum leak.

check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold... perhaps the rubber elbows for the purge valve near the back of the intake..
might even be the power brake booster leaking internally..
