My boyfriend thought it was the catalytic converter, but then we found the converter on my car, so it's not that. Something is causing my car to be extremely loud (it was kind of loud before, but driving to work yesterday it was apparent that one of the pipes was not connected completely) and he found that these two parts had deattached. I downloaded the Haynes book and it doesn't have much in terms of a diagram for an exhaust system. My dad is going to take a look at it tomorrow, but I was wanting to get a better idea of what it is and how much parts might be. There are two pictures linked below. I would really appreciate any feedback!

Which engine does your  1998 Chevrolet Cavalier have????
Available engines
4 Cylinders 4 2.2L SFI OHV
4 Cylinders T 2.4L SFI DOHC

the part you have shown is the flex joint...  almost any muffler shop can weld in a new one...   i would want to check the motor mounts first.. as you seem to be having a problem with them as that is more than likely what's causing the flex joint to fail..

there are a bunch of different pipe diameters and different lengths...

you will want to open the hood... with the car in a position that if it moves forward or rearward many yards.. it cannot hit or impact anything or anybody..

set the parking brake...

put your left foot on the main brake pedal..

put the car in drive.. with your right foot push lightly on the gas while somebody standing to the side sees if the motor moves more than about an inch and a half...   it does not take much throttle to do this..  not more than 3 to 5 seconds..

now do the same in reverse..  left foot on the brake... right foot on the gas...

see if the motor moves more than an inch and a half or so.,.

this is the 2.2 engine..

notice item 10.. the torque strut.. those can go bad.. allowing too much movement..  the other mounts can also tear

you will have to open the image in a new window to see the whole image..

I believe I have a 2.2L engine. I would want to get that part placed first since I don't really have the money to get the motor mounts fixed if it is causing it to fall out of place. I need a temporary fix right now to prevent my car from sounding so bad. Is there anything that could placed on that to clamp it to keep it in place for the time being since I don't know if any place would be open on a Sunday, that could do that.

having another flex joint welded in should not be that expensive..

by the looks of the welds.. its already been changed at least twice...

this is the aftermarket version of the item 10 torque strut..

these take usually about 10 minutes to put in.. with a pair of 15 MM wrenches...  cost under 30 bucks for the part...

when you are trying to use the flex pipe to limit the motors movement do to application of the accelerator pedal..

you could carefully design some steel chains to eliminate engine movement..
