I have an 83 Ford E-150 with the tranny going out. Is the tranny from an f-150 compatable. The E-150 has the straight 6 4.9l engine and the c6 tranny. And if it is compatable, what years are compatable. Is there a way to look up compatability of parts anywhere online. Sorry as you can probably tell I don't do a lot of work on my vehicles. I tend to buy older vehicles and run them into the ground but seeing as I have three vans that all need trannys I decided now might be the time to learn. Thanks for all your help..

just curious... which transmission do you have in the E150 now.. the 4 speed with this shape transmission pan..

or the C6 version...

if they are both C6 transmissions.. they will swap easily.. and if they are both 4.9 motors.. the 5.0 and 5.8/351W bell housings both share a pattern with the 4.9 six..
some trucks came with a 351M 400M 460.. those share a different bell housing shape..
the 4.9 has a slightly different torque converter than the 5.0 and 5.8/351W as i recall..
please describe the different vehicles you are going to take them from.. and whats in them...
either the 3 or 4 speed automatics can be swapped in. .but there are changes in the drive shaft length and slip yoke size... possible differences in the crossmember.. perhaps a slight difference in shift linkage... i have never tried to swap the 4speed for the 3 speed..
you might want to plan on doing more transmission services .. where you drain the fluid.. drop the pan.. change the filter.. install a new pan gasket and refill with 4 to 6 quarts of fresh proper fluid.. its really easy with proper transmission services about every 8 or 10 oil changes... to make almost any ford transmission of this vintage last well over 150,000 miles.. i have a friend with a 96 4.9 E250.. that just topped 400,000 miles on the original transmission.. an E4od and he drives it with his foot to the floor way too much..
