HOW THE 996 TT TWIN TURBO WON MY HEART OVER THE 993
I recently had my 2004 Porsche 996 tt twin turbo worked on at JM Motorsport in Studio City . I use to compare my 996 tt twin turbo to my old 993 and I hated the 996 tt Twin Turbo for all the changes Porsche had made to it and how luxurious the the car was, it no longer felt like a smooth Go-Cart, it felt like a Lexus on Steriods.
I spoke with John at JM Motorsport and he advised that I start building on to the car slowly to try to achieve the race car feel without compromising too much comfort.
BOOST IN POWER For a tremendous boost in power, John recommended and did the following…1. Re-programmed Computer 2. Installed more powerful Turbo’s 3. Installed new intercoolers 4. Installed new hoses ( seen in red if pictures are shown ) 5. Saved me tons of money on modifying my mufflers instead of purchasing new ones. This was the first stage of the transformation, the car felt so super fast, my 10 year old son started calling my car a MONSTER, it literally scared him when I would get on it. I was happy with the changes for about 7 months, at which time I needed a little more to feel refreshed.
LETS DO A BIT MORE John advised that I modify the car from 4 wheel drive to 2 wheel drive, it would reduce the weight of the car and would run differently and move a bit quicker. The modification from 4 to 2 wheel drive did make the car faster, but I noticed that the car handled differently also. The car felt more agile, less body roll and less front wheel slide around tight corners. I had more control over my turns, more satisfying to drive. I enjoyed the car at this stage for about 9 months.
STILL UNSATISFIED I was still very unsatisfied with the loose feel of the wheel and annoying noises when I drove over bumps on the road. My old 993 was tight, when I drove over a bump, I would simply hear a solid thump opposed to the 996 tt going over a bump. The 996 tt Twin Turbo rattles when it goes over a bump, I always felt this happened because the construction of car was compromised by Porsche. I remember my 993 engine would rev up quickly and smoothly and then rev down quickly and smoothly, the 996 tt Twin Turbo on the other hand would rev up slow and rev down slow, the engine did not move like a race car, the rpm would float on its way down, I wanted to hear the car scream when I gassed it and the rpm gauge to drop fast when I lifted my foot off the gas.
FINAL CHANGES I spoke with John at JM Motorsport about these issues and he assured me that he had a fix for these issues and it would forever change the way I view and feel about the Porsche 996 TT TWIN TURBO. I took the car in to JM Motorsport on November 14, 2011. The plan was to perform a 30k service, install GT2 Coil Over ‘s, install sway bars, align the vehicle, install a new light weight flywheel and sport clutch system. I was not very enthused about the changes to take place on the suspension because I enjoyed driving a comfortable car, I was worried that my ride would not be as enjoyable but I took the chance. It is now November 23, 2011….I feel like a kid at Christmas time, I have felt that way for 6 days now, I got my car back on Friday the 19th of November. Let me start by saying that I don’t mind picking up milk or diapers, I don’t mind driving 20 miles to drop off an envelope instead of mailing it, I don’t mind walking to the garage starting the car and just looking at it. The car is on my mind constantly because I want to finally drive it, let me explain how the car looks and feels after the last modifications.
THE END RESULT Walking over to the car, I notice the car’s height has changed, the front of the car is lower and looks ridiculously awesome, my mind is smiling with happy thoughts that this car is at last different. I step inside and take a seat and I feel the geometry of the car has changed, the hood of the car is angled down and I feel in control of this beast, now my face is smiling and I can’t hold back. I start the car and the engine revs upwards and falls back to idle like a race car, the mufflers screeching out noises in a different harmony, higher pitched… I think to myself Light Weight Flywheel and then rev the beast up and down while saying OH MY GOD and thinking THIS CANT BE REAL. I put the car in reverse and move backwards while revving the engine like a race car. I look at my rear view and adjust, I adjust my side mirrors and slowly move forward and stall the car….smile on my face, I found another reason to hear this beast start up and rev once again. I put her in 1st gear and take off slowly while winding the engine up to 5kRMP, push clutch and see the RPM gauge drop down so fast to idle, shift into 2nd and get on the gas. The car feels too amazing, it feels light, it feels tight, it corners like its one piece, I feel like I know this car….A feeling I never had before. After 6 years of owning this car, I finally love it and happy that I get to enjoy it all over again.
The 996TT has definitely won my heart over the 993.
