Hi,

I need a tune-up for my 98 4runner with 170K miles.

I want to buy the parts needed and give them to my mechanic to install. Can you:

1) Tell me what parts I need.
2) Whether I should get the parts from a dealer or auto parts store or both.

I'm not assuming that the dealer parts are necessarily better. So I want decent parts but also I don't need to go top of the line necessarily. I don't need to supercharge the vehicle, I just want to take the proper maintenance steps for the vehicle.

which motor do you have..

is the check engine light ON? if so...  that gets attended to first..

parts needed for a tune up..

spark plugs...    antiseize for the threads.. boot lube for the boots..  boot lube is usually silicone dielectric grease.. its not for the threads... it will jam them forever...   its to prevent any high voltage from leaking out between the boot and the spark plug insulator..

you may need new spark plug wires at that much mileage..

you might need new ignition coils at that mileage..


if the power is down..   you might want to have the injectors cleaned...

i knew a long term toyota mechanic...    he would actually remove the injectors.. rig up a wiring connector and a 9 volt battery..  a can of spray cleaner..  and pulse the injector while he held the nozzle down .. the spray tube was attached to the injector via some creative hose connections..  its amazing how much better the injectors flowed after just a few seconds of direct cleaning..
