just curious... did anybody perhaps.. try to jump start the truck with the cables hooked up backwards??? even for a second...
since you are getting spark.... and 89 models have throttle body fuel injection...
can you position the coil wire removed from the cap.. verify that you can get 3/4 inch of snappy blue spark...
if you can only get a 1/4 inch of dull orange spark.. change the coil.. its gone bad.. you can also look at the exterior of the round part of the coil... see if there are any signs of external leakage where high voltage leaks from the center windings to the inside of the external laminations.. that is a sure sign of high voltage leak..,.
another place to check..
when you turn on the key.. does the check engine light come on??????
when you jump the A and B connector on the ALDL connector under the dash board.. does the check engine light at least flash a code 12.. 3 times...

there might be more codes...

do you know how to count the check engine flash codes...
code 12 is the first code.... shows the computer is awake and a few other things that are NOT important at this second..
with the A and B jumped.. the key turned on.. the check engine light will turn out.. then ON.. OFF.. ON. off ON...............ON.. OFF.. ON. off ON.............ON.. OFF.. ON. off ON........
the first flash is the 10.. the second 2 make it a 12..

in addition...
please.. look at the battery negative cable.. is it properly attached to the engine block.. usually down on the front.. and a small wire to the body from the negative cable..
the ground cables to the body get knocked loose during battery change sometimes.. causing all kind of problems...
