On my 02 /3.7  leep liberty ; I have checked woth volt meter, seems to be ok. The relay did not come wit pigtail. The new relay looks melted around #1 pin (battery), any ideas why this would happen ? I can disconnect fan and connct direct, fan still works. I can reconnect wiring and jump across #1 and #2 pin on old pigtail and fan will run. Pigtail terminals do look as thoug they have gotten hot before. What do you thunk ... Also , can I connect fan to where it will run continuosly when motor is running or will this affect the a/c or some other component ?????

melting around the number one terminal is probably why some of the brands include a new connector pigtail..

loose connections build heat..  heat causes the connector terminals to become looser as the metal expands causing more heat build up.. its a run away thermal event..

your radiator cooling fans could also be drawing too much current...

that is a pulse width modulated controller..     it can vary the speeds of the fans..   by changing the pulse width from the PCM..

do you have a harbor freight tools store near you????

they have an amp meter that plugs into fuse sockets..    there are two sizes .. for the small plastic fuses..  atc or atm  sized fuses... as i don't have an exact manual for your jeep.. i don't know what shape fuse..   your cooling fan fuse could also be one of the maxi fuses..  and these won't work with them.. but you can run a digital volt meter with the probes into the jumper position to see how many amps the fans are drawing.. i hope your digital volt meter has a 20 amp DC rating..

the heat build up from the loose connection might have damaged the relay..

running the fans constantly.. will wear them out sooner.. it will sometimes melt the center out of the fan blade..    as the armature shaft gets hotter and hotter from extended powered operation..  it normally only gets powered at low speeds...  ram air through the grill cools the engine above 35MPH.. or so..  the fans freewheel in the wind..   sometimes the fans can create enough current to feedback when freewheeling to damage the solid state relays..

bad grounds to the fans cause the current to increase...  overheating the fan driver module .

not enough air flow across the aluminum pins can also hurt it..

the kits also seem to use a zip tubing over the transmission cooler hoses near by to reduce rubbing and heat transfer from the lines..

replace with a new relay that comes with a connector.. print out the diagram and relocate the module slightly..  use proper tools to crimp the terminals when splicing ...

there are multiple brands of pliers like these...

these shown are like 7 bucks..  the best are the channel lock versions at about 25 bucks..  they will last a lifetime..  forget the stamped metal versions except for stripping the wire..

they put a dent into the sleeve in the crimp connector to positively attach the wire to the sleeve..

use quality crimps if they don't come with it.. or stop over to radio shack.. they have european style terminal blocks in several sizes..   those tighten with a small screw driver ..  no crimping tools needed.. but you still have to cut and strip the wire without nicking the strands.

in fact.. the pliers above .. crush the smaller wire crimps..

don't buy those.. find some that actually put dents in the large and the small..      if you lived in california.. there are OSH hardware stores.. i have several sets of their OSH brand green handle versions that are great..  and still under 10 bucks..

jeep liberty again;; I checked all voltage as suggested, there was a bad ground. I finally found someone that could order relay with pigtail (Advence Auto Parts ; Dorman 902310, $47.00 ) I rewired pigtail as you suggested and connected new relay. Everything seems to be operating fine for now. THANKS for all of your help (Wayne 7122) . Should anything else arise I will be sure to post,FRAWG.............
