Hello all,

I've just bought myself a 1995 Toyota Hilux for a cheapish price.

It is a 22RE 2.4 Litre engine (See Below)

I would be considered a complete beginner to motors and engines of all sorts. I would like to change that.

How does one go about acquainting themselves with motor engines? I understand the basics, but I don't know how to go about teaching myself all about whats under the hood. It may require a complete dismantling of the engine, or a systematic explanation from somebody who does know. I just don't know.

I know I haven't really given you much to work with, but any info at all would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

start with a factory service manual....

and be prepared...  the one for that truck is probably 800 pages thick....

it includes repair info....    it does not include much theoretical  info .  just on the individual systems...  there is not enough time to teach you the theoretical info..  perhaps this will be enough to help you in your quest for knowledge..

you can read a LOT of info online... there are repair info sites at autozone.com   so you can go over the individual systems info..

best thing.. its free....  join and log in at the upper right corner...  select your truck...   look for the repair info link just above where you selected your truck... then in the left frame repair info..

Hey,

Thanks for the reply,

I tried Autozone, but it's no good to me =(

I'm in Australia, and they don't make the Hilux pickup in the states, so they don't have it listed.

I'll try surfing the web, but I just seem to go in circles. I get the same info that I already have.

I understand how the motor works. Spark plugs ignite the mixture and the piston does its four strokes in the cylinder, and then there's the intake and exhaust valves, and the crankshaft and the timing belt with the camshaft, and the starter motor and the alternator... I do understand the theory of it. It's the practical side that has me scratching my head.

When I look at my motor, I see the main components, like the engine block, the battery, the alternator, the intake and the exhaust, but that's where it ends. I see the individual parts but can't seem to make them fit in with the whole engine as one working machine. I have no practical knowledge about tampering with an engine.

I'm wondering if the only way to learn is to slowly and very carefully take it apart? Then again that seems like a surefire way to mess something up, especially since I've never done it before. I don't mind trying, but I want to know before hand that it's the way to go.

I hope this shed some light on my dilemma.

Thanks

please log in.. check the message link next to where you log out at..

i left you a link that might help....

if you have a specific question about something under the hood... do ask....  i don't have the time to teach you complete automotive theory.. there are Dozens of different systems that interact with each other..

toyota did sell trucks with the 22RE motor here.. since the late 70's.. they went to the 22Re like 1985 or so..  there are millions of them still running around..   seems that every scrap guy driving around los angeles has one...   picking up stuff left on curbing and hauling it to to the scrap buyers..     worst part of this.. they have gotten creative..   they have been removing the internals of the old TVs and leaving the cases.. and removing the metal parts of the recliners and car seats tossed out.. leaving the non valuable. covering..  somebody does come and pick the foam .. there are recyclers for that also.. they make it into new rug padding..

this is an earlier version of the 22re component locator..
