I would like to see a wiring chart of the ignition system for this vehicle. I've determined from research that the 4 pin conecter iis only taking the place of vacumm and mechanical advance. That simplifies thing some. Question: with regard to the two wires that plug into the external coil, the two that include a heavy wire and come from the wire harness. With key off I get continuity to ground in the heavy wire, but not the other. With key on I get 12v to heavy wire only. is this correct.

usually on that model.. its the pick up coil that has failed.. sometimes the module...
the reman distributers have a different design reluctor that does NOT crack... the pick up coil is a better design also.. the replacement module that come on these are actually a decent part also... usually transpo..

do you have a digital volt meter..
first... preset the motor... pull the cap... note where the #1 wire terminal is in the cap... turn the motor so the rotor is pointing toward the number one terminal in the cap..
now.. the damper timing marks should be close to being aligned.. you will want to look in at the pickup coil and the reluctor and turn the crank slightly so the tips of the pick up coil line up perfectly with the tips of the reluctor.. then note where the timing marks line up on the pointer/balancer.. it should be around the base timing on the label...
this way.. you know where to align the crank and you can get the distributer back in turn the housing and then you can lock it down and the car will start and run..... there is a tan and black wire someplace as described on the label to disconnect to set the timing..
you are aware that the crank turns 2 times to one of the distributer..
now... testing the pick up coil.... set digital volt meter to 2K ohms... it should read 500 to 1500 ohms of resistance.. usually around 890 ohms...
before you disconnect from the pick up coil... turn your digital volt meter to 2 volts AC or 20 volts AC scale.. spin the shaft.. you need to see over 1.0 volts or really close to it to prove the pick up coil is good... and the reluctor is good..
modules can be checked at many autoparts stores.... the grease under the module is silicone dielectric tune up grease.. its special... its a thermal compound.. not a thread lube.. it has dissolved solids in it.. that become solid again.. when crushed and exposed to heat..
check the sides of the ignition coil for signs of high voltage leaks... dust circles.. white spots... grey spots..
additionally... if you move the distributer.. or remove it.. more than likely you will need to replace the buck and a half distributer housing gasket/Oring...
Distributor Mounting Gasket For your 1985 Chevrolet Celebrity 2.8L FI OHV 6cyl Part Number: 70800 without this seal replaced.. you will have the biggest oil leak you will have ever seen... there is OIL pressure held in by the oring..

Great information. I have replaced the distributor with a reman one. The car is running and is timed at 10 BTDC. I thought the 4 pin connecter to the dist.(control modual) was the ESC. Disconnecting it would allow base timing. The car will not run when it is disconnected.
