My 1992 Saturn will not start. I am able to get power to the dash, but it will not crank. I bypassed the 'clutch switch' and am still unable to get my vehicle started. When trying to start it, I do NOT get the clicking noise that usually comes with bad starters. Any suggestions?Thank you.
clean the battery cables with a wire brush and hot water...verify the battery is charged... do you have a digital volt meter... 12.65 is 100% charge.12.45 is 75% charge.12.25 is 50% charge.if the battery is below 12.5 volts.. you might want to get the battery charged for one to two hours at 10 amps and then load test the battery... most parts stores will test .. then charge.. then load test batteries for free..it is totally possible that the 20 year old starter has just worn out.. but verifying there are not other problems first..the starter solenoid has a small terminal at the 3 o clock position.. thats the circuit that activates the starter...the solenoid circuit pulls the plunger in to extend the starter drive into the flywheel ring gear... when the plunger reaches the bottom of the solenoid bore... it pushes the plunger and forces the contact disc across the upper and lower solenoid bolt contact and sends power to the starter motor windings to spin the starter... there are a few more things... the terminal at 3 o clock.. is grounded to the stud at 6 o clock.. the 6 o clock stud is hooked to the starter brushes .. then the armature windings.. then the ground brushes... if the brushes are worn out.. there will NOT be continuity for the solenoid winding to complete the circuit and pull the plunger in ... this would result in a NO click problem...
