Hook it up to a scanner and see if any codes pop up!
If the car isn't starting and only starts when jumpped on the starter solenoid I'd check the ground!

I just put a new engine and tranny into my girlfriend's 1997 suzuki sidekick. The tranny has overdrive btw. Ok... the first tranny that I bought was bad, so I pulled that one back out, returned it and got this one as a replacment. When I put it in Drive, it will start out in second gear. I can manualy shift it into 1st with the gear selector. Also, the car won't start unless I jump the starter solenoid. I changed out the neutral safety switch (box that sits over the gear selector on the tranny, right?), and it still has both problems. One of my friends was saying that it might be in Limp mode, but I don't think that this tranny is electronicly controlled... he was also saying that it may have a bad shift solenoid. I adjusted the kick down cable in both directions without any luck. I thought I would post here before pulling this tranny out again.
