Hello. I own a 2005 Avalon Limited with Nav. I'm working on installing a backup camera with a NavTool video converter. A link to the exact camera I have is this: http://cgi.ebay.com/CCD-INFRARED-KEYHOLE-WIDE-ANGLE-REAR-VIEW-BACKUP-CAMERA-/260491533390?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ca6815c4e
I have installed the NavTool, and it works properly. I know this because the nav screen turns black when the vehicle is in reverse.
The backup camera has been bench-tested and works as well.
HOWEVER, I cannot seem to properly wire the power cable (5.5mm round tip plug) that plugs into the camera cable and has positive and negative leads. The ground is the bolt that holds down the metal frame around the navigation computer in the trunk. I have the power coming from the reverse light wire (black wire at the harness near the top left side of the trunk). The multimeter reads 12V when in reverse, and the ground works because I have the NavTool grounded there as well.
PLEASE HELP WITH THE FOLLOWING: I bench-test the camera with a power adapter with an input rated at 120VAC 60Hz 12W and an OUTPUT rating of 12VDC 500mA and it WORKS. The camera requires 12VDC 250mA. The camera picture shows up on the nav screen when plugged into the NavTool and I'm using the above 500mA power adapter plugged into the garage wall. The camera DOES NOT WORK with the 12V setup I have right now with the reverse light.
I feel the power cable with +/- leads currently wired into the car may be faulty. Has anyone else had this problem? If I replace the cable and it still doesn't work, WHAT DO I DO THEN?
Thanks in advance for the help, and please ask questions if I have been unclear.

be careful of which wires near the back up lights you work with...
i don't have a wiring diagram for that car.. but i bet the rear lights are operated by CAN... controller area network.. computer sends data stream on a pair of wires that is shared with all the other bulb drivers at the back of the car..
there may be current limiting devices in the circuit..
you really need to find the wiring diagram for the back up lights.. or run a wire from the front to power the back up camera...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
lets take a look at the stop light wiring.. i cannot see the small print on my laptop display.. so i cannot read the words..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i did not find the specific back up light wring diagram...
there are about 300 pages of wiring diagrams...
perhaps what i have posted will help..
what happens when you run a direct pair of power wire directly from the battery.. could the camera really need a regulated voltage or it goes into shut down..
there is a forum over at a sister mag on this site.. called caraudiomag.com

Thank you very much for the helpful information. You were correct. I supplied direct battery power and the camera works! However, I am a bit ignorant when it comes to wiring diagrams and all the symbols. That said, if you have suggestions as to where to tap into inside the cabin of the car, that'd be great. Hopefully I can find the wiring diagrams for something closer to the trunk besides the under-dash fuse box. Thanks to all in advance who provide suggestions.
