Okay, the check engine light has been on intermittantly for some time now. Took it to a reputable shop and had the comuter diagnostic thing done. It did not show any errors at the time, even thoughthe chk eng light was still on at the time. His skilled opinion was one of several things from least to most expensive: battery (crack in a cell causing it to imtermittant) or aftermarket battery terminals (could be a short in cables or harness) alternator (just starting to go bad) or voltage regulator (which happens to be inside the COMPUTER). check engine light on continuous now and "charging system light" on intermittantly now. So, I replaced the battery and cleaned up the cables first off. It does not do the typical brighter/dimmer etc reving the engine but I noticed that sometimes when I drive or about 15-20 min and a cruising speed and suddenly down shift(slight jolt and rpm jump to about 2500) instantly gharging system light goes off lights are bright and beautiful blah blah blah.
Heres the kicker!!! I was at my cruising speed 15 minutes into my drive and all the sudden my stereo just shut off completely lights and all then back on. Did this 2 times and then my speedometer needle starting jumping from 0-70+ back and forth like it was possesed; all back to normal briefly and did it again, then stereo went off again and speedo went straight to 0. All while still doing about 60mph. This continued for approx 1 mile and then everything came back on like nothing ever happen. My check engine light stayed on the whole time and all instrument panel lights stayed normal.
SOOOOO.... any suggestions? alternator? voltage regulator? or demon possessed (kidding of course)? Thanks in advance!!!

Sounds more like a connector issue some where in all the harness connections.

WOOOHOOOO!!! I actually figured it out myself and Thanks Rapid.
I was able to finally figure out how to retrive the codes from my computer. Turns out it is not only the alternator but the M.A.P. sensor, as well!! And the sensor is only $49. I am sooo excited.

so glad you figured out what was wrong...I had almost the same thing happen to mine but it was the crankshaft position sensor and the MAP. My engine was cutting out because of the CPS , but it was only for a second and it made all the dash lights come on and the radio shut off. Everytime it went out it felt like the Jeep was jumping in and out of 4-wheel drive it wasn't till it did it while I was driving at night that I noticed the lights going off and on. I replaced the CPS and then it started backfiring and missing. So I ran diag. again and found the MAP was bad changed that and no help....turns out the CPS I got from the parts store had a reversed pullarity to it so I had to get a dealer one. Now all is well again.
