I ran over something that destroyed both left tires. The guy at Sears told me that because I have all wheel drive, I have to buy four tires so the treads will match, and that if I don't, my transaxle might be damaged. He refused to sell and install only two tires.
The two remaining good tires have different treads than each other and one or both of them have asymmetrical treads.
My car is a 2003 Subaru Legacy station wagon (not SUV).
Advice from people who know what they're talking about will be much appreciated.

Subarus are particularly sensitive to tire diameter. If the tire diameters are different enough, it will cause the center viscous coupling to fail - very expensive.
Just to be on the safe side, the general rule for all AWD's is to replace tires in sets of 4. Consider it one of the prices to be paid for AWD.

Yes,your tires do have to match.Tire guy is right, he'd be putting them in a situation of being liable for the possible damage to your car by putting on only two tires that didn't match the other two.Check your owner's manual and you'll see the spec for yourself.
