I am having problems with my 2000 automatic Jeep Wrangler. It idles low and when I am at a stand still for an extended period it will stall. Also, occassionally it will not start. If I rev the engine it will start as long as i am able to keep the idle high enough.I took it to my mechanic about a week ago for this issue and he found nothing wrong with it (it didnt stall for him of course) but it did it again today so I know it is an issue. Any suggestion of what I can make sure a mechanic looks at when I bring it in again? Thanks!
which motor... 2.5 or 4.0???do you have any exhaust leaks????/ cracked header.... ???? header cracks can be welded up by most muffler shops with a mig welder (wire feed) ... i normally take them off to do it... so they can get it perfect.. but many times.. they can get at them ...since you have a 2000 model.. you have the ability to plug in an OBD2 scan tool... and look at the live data...checking the throttle position sensor voltage.. checking the idle air counts.... should be 20 to 50 on most cars at idle... with the engine warm...if you have less than 20 you probably have an air leak... or a vacuum leak...if you have more than 50... you probably have carbon build up on the throttle blades and idle air control passage..i normally start with inspecting the rigid vacuum hoses... the PCV and the breather come out with a quarter turn .. replacement vacuum hoses are available at most jeep dealers... usually under 20 bucks... as i recall... don't cut the tape that holds them together.. its actually in the exact right place... try it the other way... cleaning the throttle bore... removing the idle air control motor and cleaning the passages and the end of the idle air motor.. usually with brake cleaner spray... this removes the carbon buildup around the throttle blade and the throttle bore... there is a known amount of air leakage around the throttle blade.. when the carbon builds up this leakage is reduced .. the computer does not know that this has happened and the jeep may stall sometimes..hope this helps....i have a chart for GM cars and trucks... the jeep system is almost identical... but cleaning is where i would start...if you have an exhaust leak... start there first... the intake on either motor comes off with forethought in about an hour.. so you can get the muffler off.. there are some special connectors for the fuel line that only come from the autoparts store... HELP carded products... i can supply a part number... if you need it.. jeep wanted a lot for the plastic clips...
