I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo v6. My oil pressure has been dropping. It is full of oil. almost time to be changed. No warning lights are coming on on my jeep. oil prsseure is fine when you accererate. but when you stop it drops. Could it just be a crazy gage or what. i dont know where to start. is it oil pump or a sensor. i would really appericate any help.  It has been doing this since it has really gotten to be cold weather. It is not making any sounds or noises.

do you have a 4.0..  if so.. thats an Inline six...

about 90% of the time....   you can clean the area around the bottom of the switch with brake cleaner or carb cleaner so you get all the dirt and road debris out....

disable the ignition system by unplugging the connector at the coil...

verify the engine cranks.. but does not start...

then remove this..

place a drain bucket/pan under this area of the engine..

then have somebody crank the engine for 20 seconds... while you are watching the oil flowing out of the opening..  you might see a BIG clog come out..

screw in a new oil pressure sending switch...    add more engine oil after verifying how low it is on the dip stick and plug the coils back in and start the engine...  check for oil leaks...   blast the area clean with more brake cleaner..  check for leaks again..    this usually takes care of the problem..

the hardened plug of oil in the oil galley pushes against the tiny opening on the oil sending unit and cuts off the pressure into it.. messing with the pressure reading....

there have also been problems with the oil building sludge ...  sludge that coats the inside of the engine and prevents the oil from draining back into the pan....  and can also CLOG the oil pump pick up in the pan..

this is the other 10 % of problems...   and usually with the 4.7 V8.  this requires serious work.. cleaning the sludge from the engine.. then dropping the oil pan and cleaning the oil pump screen to restore full flow of oil being suctioned into the pump...

there are several other threads on this EXACT problem you might want to read...

use the search link to the right of the active posts link...  and search for jeep oil pressure...
