Should I change the oil?

(sorry if this is a duplicate post - can't seem to find my other one)

Hi folks!

I have a car that only gets driven a few miles every other week or so, and gets maybe 500 miles per year (toyota corolla). Yes, 5 hundred... Last year I decided to not change it for a year, and when I brought it to the shop, the guy was surprised I did not change it for the whole year and said 'I guess that's fine'. I changed the oil then (and the guys said they use synthetic oil which lasts longer than normal kind), and did nothing else for another year, which brings us to today.

When I check the oil color, it's very light. Still, I brought the car to change the oil to a (different) shop. The mechanic there said there is no point changing oil on the car. The guy behind the counter (owner) looked at it with him and me nearby, and said that if he changed the oil for me, he would put it in his own car, so really there is not much point. (He was also complaining to me earlier they are not making any money on a $20 oil change - so I don't think he has a lot of motive to change the oil)

A friend of mine (NOT a car guy, but a DYI) says that they are wrong and that when oil sits in my car it decomposes, which is bad for the engine, and so I should go to some other place and change the oil. Another friend (also a DYI) said who knows how long the oil sits at mechanics place in the first place - so it would decompose there as well, to which the first friend replies that at mechanic's shop the oil sits in air-tight containers and so that's different.

What do folks here think?
