Will any 16 inch tire fit on a 16 inch rim or must I use the same #'s?

NO!!!

That would be going down in load carrying capacity and that leads to tire failures.  Very Bad!!

But if you are having trouble locating the 215/65R16 size, try a 225/60R16.  Functionally equivalent.

No,

Same reasoning as before:  That is going down in load carrying capacity and that leads to tire failures.  Very Bad!

First, the real answer has to start with knowing the vehicle in question.  Without that information, you could be creating a dangerous situation.  We wouldn't want that to happen.

Second, the wheel specs you provided do not have the width - and that is an important thing to know.

My stock tires are 225/60-R15. A real pain to find decent replacements for.

Can I use 195/55-R15?

No.  Do NOT replace 225/60R15's with 195/55R15's.  That is going down in load carrying capacity 2 steps.  Definitely the wrong direction.

Thanks. According to this site-> http://www.tiretown.com/tires_101/size15.htm I can use 245/50R15 True or false? I would like to have wider tires out back, like the 245s, and something more narrow in the front (like the stock 225/60R15 or even 215/65R15).

Mike,

That doesn't say the tires will fit your car.  It says they are acceptable substitutes.  Not exactly the same thing.  Your fenders are only so big - and your wheels, too.

In my case the "why" is simple: economics. I have a car that is on its last leg but I can't afford to replace it for another few weeks but we are already in heavy winter driving conditions. The new vehicle I am purchasing doesn't use the same size of tire. I don't want to spend $1000 on winter tires. My current vehicle calls for 215/60R16 92(H) and the new vehicle is 205/60R16 92(H).

Can I just invest in the 205mm wide wheels now and then still keep them to use on the new vehicle when I purchase it?

I can't afford to spend $1000 on tires for a car that will be hauled away for parts and then another $1000 on tires for a car I'll drive for many more years. I also need to keep driving in winter conditions with the junk car for as long as possible.

Why not do the reverse?  Buy 215/60R16 winter tires and appropriate wheels and when you get your new car, you'll have everything you need.

I'm putting 17" rims on a 2008 ford ranger (2 wheel drive, 2 door sport version).  what would be the largest wide tire I can use.  I'm wanting to use Coker redline tires.

thanks for the help.
