Hello,
I'm about to buy a 2002 Honda Civic LX (Coupe) for about $5000. I obtained an Autocheck report and it shows no accidents or other major issues. It has about 82,000 miles on it and the only negative thing was that it had been a lease vehicle once. What do you think about the deal? Is the price fair? Or I should wait more? Do you think the transmission problem is really big in those cars? The guy said over the phone it has no transmission slips and things of this sort...
Let me know what you think because I'm a first time buyer and I don't want to get ripped off...
Thank you in advance!

huge problem on hondas.... expensive to rebuild...   1,800 on the low end.. 2,800 on the upper end..  but these are prices i have heard from friends...

timing belts and water pumps need to be done soon on that model.. at that mileage.. so you can plan the downtime.. instead of dropping it off on a tow truck and needing it back asap...

this is not a bad report on hondas...  other cars have exactly the same problems..

i have friends who have over 250K miles on their y2k hondas...

there are some transmission experts on here once in a while...  stay posted... they might offer more info..

but if the transmission is acting up..  its probably going to fail...

one of my friends had a honda extended warrantee..  he took it in many times for weird shifting..  they just turned off the light and sent him on his way...  once it got out of warrantee.. then they told him he would have to buy a transmission...   but this was the dealership....   and i would bet that each time they turned off the light.. they charged honda a big repair bill for something major..

i have avoided honda most honda work... so i am not familiar with what fails in the transmissions..

i know the valve bodies are on top...   and the transmission fluid changes have to be done 3 times...  with a short test drive between changes.. as the transmission filter is a strainer and is NOT replaceable except with a tear down..  swapping in fresh fluids lets most of the oil get changed.. and some of the debris out..

other than this .. they are excellent cars...  oh.. and some places have a hi theft rate...
