My wife has a 2005 Nissan Altima with approximately 65k miles.  She would like to trade it in for a new vehicle.

My question is this: would she see a return on investing in servicing the car prior to selling it?  I can tell you that it in need of 4 new tires and some significant work on the suspension (getting an estimate on repairs this week).

Is there a general rule of thumb for this?
Thanks in advance for your replies!

that is a question beyond me..

it depends upon who your are selling it to....

dealers won't usually give you more money if you fixed it up first..   as they can do the job cheeper..

this also depends upon where you live..

the dealer would like nothing better than a car they don't have to put a cent into to resell..

why not go to the front page of this site and check the going prices of your wifes model car...  then look at what the dealer is going to offer..

Though you may lose a bit of money by selling your car pre-repairs, you can make that money back (plus some) by selling it privately.  The average owner makes $2000-$5000 extra cash when they avoid the dealership.  A family member of mine just sold their Mountaineer for $3300 more than the dealership quoted them!  Also, when dealing with an individual, you can sell it "as is" and avoid the hassle of expensive repairs.

Check out information on this and more at www.secretstosellingmycar.com.  I would also be happy to give you a free copy of our eBook, Secrets to Selling My Car, if you would like to give private sale a shot!

I agree with the part that dealers won't give you back the investment. Usually after they take a car they fix it anyway and test it for resale!

Don't think too much about that. in my opinion, you should sale the old car and take some more money to buy a new one. you may repair something on the old car. So, it will be easier to sale.

good luck!

A family constituent of mine just traded their Mountaineer for $3300 more than the dealership cited them!  Also, when considering with an one-by-one, you can deal it "as is" and bypass the provoke of costly repairs.
