I just bought a used 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix with 86,000 miles on it for about $2000. It runs fine, just needs a little work on the A/C, brakes and has a slight problem activating the hazard lights (signals work though). I managed to get the dealer to throw in brake pads and rotors for the car, which I'll fix up soon enough. What I wanted to know was what bits of basic maintenance can I do, and if there's any way I can get the A/C and hazard lights fixed on my own. I'm a college student so money's always a little tight. Kind of unwilling to bring the car in for a check up by a mechanic as far as possible. Is there anything I can do about the A/C and hazard lights? Also, my engine seems to heat really strangely; it oscilliates from 210F to 250F according to the thermostat. Just topped up the coolant. What else could be wrong?Any help would be great! I'm just not all too familiar with cars.
One thing worth pursuing if you do go for an E61 5 series and buy from a dealer, see if you can get a software update (from BMW) negotiated in as part of the deal. The updates to the Professional nav system include the option of a Perspective view which is much better than the above view that was only thing available on early versions. It updates quite a lot of other stuff on the car too
