I have somehow gotten a crack in 4L60E Bellhousing. It is in my 96 GMC 1500 4X4 5.7, but I had to change the Tranny out of a 98 Tahoe 4X4 some time ago due to cracks and leaks that developed in the 96 4L60E one piece housing (no bellhousing type). Everything bolted and plugged right in and has been working great for a year (I did have to use the 98 Tail Adapter Housing due to the 96 had a 4 bolt pattern and the 98 a 6 bolt pattern at the rear of trans itself). My question is will any 98 and later 5.7 4L60E Bellhousing (4 or 2 WD) work and is this the one that they call the "Top Hole". I don't remember if the 98 had the top hole or not and I can't see it while still in the truck and I would like to have my part in hand before I get to that point. Thanks for any help you can give me.

You will have to stay with years 96 through 98 .
Beginning at the start of production for 1996 models, some THM 4L60-E transmissions were built with a bolt-on bellhousing. The 4.3L V6 engine is the only one to recieve the bolt-on bellhousing for 1996 models, and will was expanded to most other engine sizes for 1997 bolted to the main case with eight bolts that require what appears to be a normal 50 Torx-bit to remove. These bolts require a "TORX PLUS 50-IP" bit to remove. The normal 50 Torx-bit will strip the head on most bellhousing bolts, if used for removal.
The different bellhousings are"
1---300mm TORQUE CONVERTER 1999 REGULAR "BIG BELL"c/k truck
2----1996-1998 REGULAR "BIG BELL"
3-----HOLDEN "BIG BELL"
4-----CORVETTE
5----HOLDEN "SPECIAL" S/T TRUCKS
6----REGULAR S/T TRUCKS
One is approximately 1/4" deeper than the previous "Big Bell" and is
designed to accommodate a new 300mm converter that is used in the 1998 Firebird and 1999 C & K Trucks.
The best identification is the added bolt hole at the top of the bellhousing. This style bellhousing and the 300mm converter also require a new design turbine shaft and stator shaft that are also about 1/4" longer.
Another has four added holes for an added dust shield, and can be compared
the previous design "Big Bell" and included in this the 1998 design changes.
the Holden "Big Bell" that is export only ..
the 1997-1998 Corvette with the transmission mounted in the rear
of the vehicle and is used with a torque tube.
The Holden "Special" S/T Truck bell that is export only,
This bell has part of the housing cast out as compared to the Regular S/T Truck bell .
the Regular S/T Truck bellhousing used in North America and is  different than the export S/T Truck bellhousing
Every C/K truck built from 1999 and on has the removable bell.
300 mm CONVERTER ADDED BOLT HOLE AND IS APPROX. 1/4" DEEPER
This style bellhousing and the 300mm torque converter also require a new design
turbine shaft and stator shaft that are approximately 1/4" longer than other models.
