Yesterday morning on my way to work I started have a problem out of the blue. When I reached about 30mph my truck seemed to slip out of gear or something, it would rev up but would just coast and not speed up. A friend thought it might be low on transmission fluid but it seems to have enough when I checked it this morning. Any ideas on what this might be, I hope it is not an expensive repair, I have over 100,000 miles on my truck. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
the transmission fluid level has to be checked with the engine running .. the truck on level ground. and the transmission in park... after moving the gear shift through each gear.. even sitting still... pull the stick .. wipe it off.. dip again... check the level.. double dipping is allowed when checking transmission fluid.. unlike party potato chips and dips..it is also possible that the transmission needs service..a transmission service requires the transmission pan to be loosened.. while the fluid drains out... then removed.. the filter gently removed and a new one installed.. the pan should be inspected for residues ... fuzzy stuff is friction material.. brass , aluminum and steel fragments mean more damage.. a new gasket if the original is not a forever rubber gasket.. some are..after reinstalling the filter and pan... add 3 quarts of fluid.. start the engine .. check the level.. bring up the level a half quart at a time till it reaches the full mark.. if you fluid level was at the proper level.. you can measure what came out .. but you still have to start with the 3 quarts and fill from there.. warning.. some shops sell a transmission flush... not a bad idea.. but most shops don't bother dropping the pan and changing the filter.. they say its not needed... with a flush.. wrong.. you will be seeing them soon for a complete transmission as significant prices..would you drive your truck 100K without changing the engine oil and filter???? 12K to 25 K on transmission fluid changes.. hope this helps... it is possible . that if you have a 1967 ford truck.. that you probably need the transmission overhauled also... they are build ford tough.. but 43 years... i have gotten over 200K out of ford transmissions.. with service.. my 70 has 365K on it.. and is on the 3rd trans.. do to a trans leak when someone else was driving it and they burned up the clutches..
