Im going to give as much detail as possible. When the car is in idle there is a whirring noise when i press down on the clutch it stops when i drive in gear the whirring noise goes a little faster and louder with the RPMS but when i press on the clutch it stops. My father is convinced its the throwout bearing. We took everything apart got to the transmission and opened it up and removed the clutch and pressure plate and throwout bearing. THE PRESSURE PLATE had deep gash's on the outside the the side with the clutch in it? This was odd. So i ordered a nice new clutch kit : clutch , pressure plate and throwout bearing/ release bearing, tool. To be honest i could not for the life of me and three guys get the transmission out i could only open it enough to remove the clutch kit, idk why because i went through the entire procedure hyundai does not want us working on out trans haha, if anyone has a tip on that please tell me. below im listing many symptoms to help you consider any remedy or tips or if im already done, my trans is open now so i can do anything easy. maybe all these little problems have one culprit im am realy hoping its just the throwout bearing, but my shifting and driving are partialy affected by this problem so idk like ive stated below
I drive a 2002 manual transmission sonata with 109,000 miles, 1. Speedometer doesnt work 2. Odometer is frozen at 109,000 it is digital, tachometer is fine and works 3. When i shift into 3 or 4th or 5th it feels like it try's to grind or bite the stick 2/3 times. there are times actulay alot of time where its hard to get into gear. slave cylinder problem maybe? 4. when im accelerating in 2nd 2/3 times it rocks back a little bit hesitating to accelerate, im thinking spark plugs maybe. 5. the scary one 2/5 times when i try to go in reverse right when i hop in the car it jerks like the world is going to end and wont go it will almost shake itself backwards but then like 5 minutes later it will be fine, this has happened like 1/10 times with 1st gear but the reverse is scary. it is hard to explain but ive been asked to go into further detail i start to go in reverse and everything start shaking violentley i cannot feel if im moving backwards because im making such little progress. 6. theres a noise and when i press the clutch down the noise stops. 7. went to autozone and got the thing plugged in and it said the error speed sensor malfunction BTW
thats all the info , im planning the following repairs ive seen recomended 1. Replace the speed sensor, i believe this will fix the speedometer and i hope to god the odometer. 2. replace spark plugs, i dont they have ever been changed so maybe this will stop the hesitation? 3. fill up the brake fluid its at about 70% maybe the will help the clutch or shifting? the biting is very nerving 4. break down and cry because the problem is transmission and will break my bank? but i dont think it is?
Im wondering if im on the right track or if anyone has any advice or similair storys because i need help , im far from a mechanic so im sorry i dont know that much but i know whats what in a car. just a monkey with tools and need instruction.
can a manual transmission be affected by a bad speed sensor? or spark plugs is that what could be my dilema?? Defineitley would appreciate any insight people! thanks

since i have not worked on this late a model i am going to give you some best guesses...
is this model equipped with a pilot bearing in the middle of the flywheel or back of the crank??? if you did change it...
how did you drive the new one in... by tapping on the center that can spin.?? or by driving it in with a large socket that only touched the outer race?? if you drove it in with the inner race... you may have damaged it... put dents in the ball bearings.. it may make noise when the clutch is released...
but... i have a question..... if you did not get the transmission all the way out.. how did you line up the clutch disc with the pilot bearing??? i have lined them up by centering the disc with the pressure plate that on some you can reach in 3 places as i tighten the cover down...
problems getting the transmission out.. in most cases.. mechanics use a support bar that has hooks from above..
i have an early version of this 60 buck tool from harbor freight..
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=96524
after i release the transmission mounts and the front and rear motor mount.. remove any cross member that runs under the center of the motor... i lower the engine slightly.. but the engine side mount it still hooked up.. this angles the transmission downward so i can pull the transmission straight off... without it hitting the inner frame rail...
back to more questions.. how hard was the transmission to line up with the engine when you were putting it all back together..??? i have had other owners of hyundai's change their clutch.. not line up the disc.. and use long bolts to pull the transmission to the engine ... this pushes the transmission input shaft into the transmission... ruining the transmission.. usually bending the flat rear face of the engine block also.... this is totally wrong to ***
what goes on in asian factory manuals... they are written in the native language... and translated.. the translators are usually NOT MECHANICS... and don't have a CLUE of what they are translating..
i know this happens everywhere.. i was tired of working on cars... the wife found a want ad for parts cataloging for a graphics company.. we both went for the test... i missed some of the answers... the wife got most of hers... but you had to show how you arrived at the answers on a scratch paper... they called back... the wife answered.. they told her that they wanted her to come in... then they called back... wanted me to come in... they were interested in how i could have missed so simple an answer but saw i was a thinker in the work i did to translate the addition of fractions into decimals... with a clock running..
the offer to the wife was a mistake on their end.. they were trying to reach me.. and we had he same phone number.. when the wife found out... she was furious.. they even offered her a different job at same pay doing something slightly different just to get me... so i know how hard it is to get knowledgeable catalog and manual production help and understand.. why its not in print...
for any of you who think i am joking... copy this link... and paste it in a new window...

examine how the steering linkage is held together.... i have a hard copy of this in a factory manual... i think i will print a big one for my wall...
