Does anyone know where the fuel filter is located on my 1999 Audi A6 avant?

I don't know either but try this simple search first. Go and buy the filter, know you know what it looks like. Start at fuel tank, follow lines forward to engine. You may find it underneath car or perhaps on the firewall under the hood or just before connecting to engine. A lot of foeign cars tend to hide things under other items, look close at things.

Thanks - problem is that in NJ it's 16 degrees, I have no lift, and I have a fuel leak near the passenger side front wheel under the engine. A few months ago a dealer replaced the fuel filter on my '99 A6 Avant w 145,000 miles for $200+ when they reprogrammed the tranny, which had gone into fail-safe mode. I can bring it back to the dealer and pay him $105/hr and hope that they messed up changing the filter and fess up to it, or I can go to another mechanic and pay to have the fuel filter fixed or, if its another problem, pay less than the dealer to fix it. Quandry!
Right now I'm thinking about not going back to the dealer - I think the filter is probably back near the fuel tank, thus not likely to be the source of the leak.
Any thoughts?

Mike- Did you ever get this leak sorted out? My '98 A6 has had a fuel leak for a number of months. The dealer first replaced the filter with no affect. Now he's telling me that the Fuel tank needs to be replaced! I've never heard of a fuel tank hsving to be replaced. FYI-since I bought the car new in late '98 its had a very small oil leak. Just a few drops on the garage floor. I've told the dealer about this over the course of the last 8 years and have always been told they couldn't find the leak. Well they've found it now and say "it's leaking oil everywhere, you need as new engine". Anyone else experiencing anything like these issues?

We must have the same car. '98 Audi Quattro leaks oil like a Harley and now fuel like the Valdez. Cracked plastic tank! Tank has no moving parts, yet fails- another Audi first. This thing is dangerous and parked. $1300 tank and $600 labor needed to fix and unload.

I have a 1998 Audi A6. VIN WAUBA 24 BOWN... I fixed my problem by having my tank removed. Good news-My tank was fine, however there was a rubber hose leaking at the right front top side of the tank. It was near the top so only a problem when full..however lots of fumes and fuel loss. The tank has several hose connections - not sure why. Appear to be collecting fumes on to a larger hose and then sent to the engine. My mechanic was convinced there was a crack in the tank. Well anyways....I bought a used tank (new was $1,400) to be ready just in case. I am now selling it on ebay and it is available for a reasonable price of $100 + $75 for shipping/packaging(weighs 50lbs). I paid 4 times this from a recycled parts dealer. When I was shopping I know the tank fit several models. Pls use the vin and ask the dealer. Let me know if your interested. Thx Dave
