My son has a 1991 Ford Ranger with a manual transmission.  I drove it the other day and when I went to restart it after and errand, the engine started racing.  At one point the tachometer was up to 6.  I turned the truck off and restarted it.  It ran fine after that, no racing.  I am going to take it in to have it looked at, but I would appreciate any ideas as to what may cause this. I have a mechanic that I like and trust, but I always feel better going in with some idea about the possible causes of a problem.

Thank you very much.

i would like to start by removing the throttle body... seeing if the linkage is binding... catching... hanging up... inspecting the throttle cable for free movement... when the cable cores are about to break.. they fret... they bind in the casing...

cleaning the throttle body bore... without getting liquid spray into the throttle position sensor or into the idle air control valve..

you might also want to replace the idle air control valve.. there is no way that it can let the engine run to that kinds of speed... but it could be hanging up... they do wear out...

there is only one system that can control the throttle... to make the engine run that fast... the Cruise Control......  i think i would probably disconnect it at the throttle body.. just to be sure...\

this problem has shown up on other cars... run away engine speeds...  it is important..  REALLY important..  that you teach your family members...  if the engine speeds up and the car starts accelerating without your input...  teach them how to shift the transmission into NEUTRAL...   this is a mechanical disconnect... the computer cannot override this movement of shift lever...   shift to neutral... NOT PARK...  shift to neutral...

the ecm will not let the engine run fast enough to blow up.. there are built in rev limiters...

teaching family members to shift to neutral... may save their lifes... other peoples lifes... and possibly the car or truck...

I cant figure out how the throttle could get stuck that wide open after you shut the car off.Do you depress the accelerator before you start the car?
