Our teenager convinced us to help him buy a 1997 Chevy Lumina with 140,000 miles from a friend so he could go to college and work in our area. Since then, he has accepted a job in another town a 30 mile round trip distance, bumper to bumper during rush hour, over windy canyon roads. We're concerned that it does not seem to be a reliable car for this type of trip, particularly since it seems to be leaking coolant. Is this a serious problem? Should we insist that this problem get fixed before taking it on this drive?

which engine...
1997 Chevrolet Lumina-Sedan:
Available engines
6 Cylinders M 3.1L SFI OHV
6 Cylinders X 3.4L SFI DOHC
8th digit __^___ of the vin number

both engines have had problems with intake manifold gaskets failing...

both have various hoses that could leak....

both have water pumps that can go bad... at that kind of mileage...

both have heater cores that have leaked in the past...

beware... when working on the cooling systems...  there are bleeder screws to let trapped air out of the motor before closing the hood after filling the coolant..

these problems i have listed... are normal problems to every car...   and to the this car..

if its leaking coolant...  get it fixed properly...  replace any hoses that feel soft to the squeeze.. mushy..   some parts stores have loaner radiator pressure testers in their loan a tool system..  pump it to 7 psi and wait..  any leaks will show up ...

Thanks for the information.

Just FYI, it's got a 3.1 V6 engine.
