2002 Mercury Mountaineer Tranny

My tranny misses 3rd gear not all the time and when it does just let off and it will go into gear. it was serviced at ford 20,000 ago. it doesn't slip just misses so i bought a new shift sol hoping it was external,but it doesnt look that way (this is the sealed trans) can anyone help?

This is not a "sealed trans" the pan is removable..
I believe that the problem is not with the solenoid PAC. I would be looking for a problem with the intermediate band...this trans evolved from the C4 trans ,into the 4R44 and 4R55 trans and finally into the 5R55 w/s transmission,, through the years they never addressed the problem with the band strut that will bend and then separate from the band itself, making the band out of adjustment.
If you drop the pan you will probably find the strut in the bottom of the pan.or partially separated from the main part of the band.

Yea those band break constantly. If you have it fixed then get the servo bores sleeved too.
