if you have any car run away (accelerate uncontrollably) while you are driving it... carefully put the car in neutral... the engine will then be disconnected from the drive wheels... and you should be able to stop the car.... don't worry about blowing the motor.. the Rev limiter will protect it...
there have been a lot of people killed just for the lack of this knowledge..
this will stop any run away car...
tell your friends.. tell your family member.. this is really easy to do.. and may save your lifes. your family and others..
if you know a police official ... not just an on the street officer.. they need to see about changing the local 911 operator training to include.. the first thing to do is to Put it in neutral... sometimes you only have seconds and not enough time to open the 911 manual..
how many pilots are now familiar with the ditch button on the aircraft they fly... the button that locks all the rear doors and closes the openings that will keep the plane afloat longer.. off thread... but an important thing to know up front..
there have been other cars that also run away... i have seen them do it.. its not nice.. just dropping the transmission into neutral would have saved them,.... one small truck. not a toyota.. the owner was playing with the cruise control.. it got stuck on at full throttle... he came down the freeway at full throttle... front brakes locked up.. rear brakes red hot.. he got off the freeway.. clipped a parked truck.. that threw the truck sideways.. flipped it... it landed on its wheels going backward... i saw the tire tracks when one rear tire touched down still spinning forward... then the other wheel touched down still spinning forward.. the forward spinning of the tires made a pair of stripes that looked like breast cancer ribbons as the truck accelerated forward again until it hit the wall of a shop... the passenger was ejected.. got glass in her eye.. the driver was really lucky.. he was wearing a kevlar construction jacket.. one that stops saw blade cuts.. the sleeve had road rash from where his arm was sliding along the pavement... he had failed to put it neutral.. failed to turn off the key.. most cars will not let you turn the key all the way off while the transmission is in any gear except park... the driver told me of how he had just bought this used truck.. and it was a salvage title... and this was the first time he had tried the cruise control... i was not allowed to examine the truck to see if the brake light switches were properly hooked up.. and functioning..
with the drive by wire type of throttle control that is standard on almost every car.. i have worried about this for years...
at least the gear shifter is still mechanical.. so if you push it into neutral.. it should disconnect the engine from the driveshaft even with the torque converter clutch locked up...
remember... there are several gear positions on automatic transmission shifters..
Park Reverse Neutral overdrive drive low
neutral is where you want to push the shifter.. waynep7122
