Transmission Slipping

I have a 1998 dodge ram 2500 pickup.  The transmission slips to the point that I cannot move after a few minutes of driving.  If I shutoff the engine and let it cool, then after a few minutes I can drive again for a few minutes again before the transmission starts slipping.  Anyone know if this can be fixed by changing the fluid, it may have had the wrong fluid put in it at some point, or does this sound like I just need a new transmission?  Thanks, Matt.

yes.... change the fluid and the filter...     do this often.. 12,000 to 15,000 miles... when the filter clogs.. it will stop the fluid from being picked up by the pump...

no fluid pressure .. no go..

warning.. low fluid levels will do this also..

and if you have not already damaged the transmission..  low fluid levels and clogged filters are really really hard on the front pump...

these transmissions need to have the filter changed.. the only way to do it is to drop the pan..   take the filter out.. put a new filter in.. refill the fluid...   start with 3 quarts...  and check the level...  bring it up to the full mark.. half a quart at a time..

Usually the filter clogs because something in the trans is coming apart. The most common filter clogging failure is a bad torque converter clutch.Change the filter and hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
