My wife drives our '99 Ranger 4.0L 4X4 Automatic O/D. She took off for work this morning, backed out of the garage and drove to work. When she tried to leave at lunch there was no reverse. I got there and I could hear a kind of whiring sound when put into reverse and a clunk at the rear wheels, but no reverse. I left her my car and drove the Ranger home. No problems in any forward gears. Got it home and tried 4 wheel drive and that seemed to work fine in high and low 4X4 but still no reverse. Does this sound like a rebuild or remaned tranny is in my future?
any help much appreciated, toodawgs

if there are no forward gear problems then your problem is most likely with the rear band. drop the pan and remove the 4 10 mm bolts holding the servo cover.you might have a broken servo piston.if not when the piston is removed you can check the band with a thin screwdriver.you should be able to see the tab on the band that the piston pushes on to apply the band.put the screwdriver up against the tab and push.you should only have about a third of an inch of travel much more than that and the band is probably broken.
